ORGANIC BY TRADITION SUSTAINABLE BY CHOICE 

The Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) supports over 50,000 coffee farmers in the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia. 

Since 2002 YCFCU has been working directly with coffee producers by partnering with 28 primary cooperatives, helping smallholder coffee farmers become financially more sustainable by growing better coffee, accessing new markets and improving their income. 

The coffee grown is organic by default. Due to long-standing farming traditions and practices, the principles of indigenous agroforestry are at the core of Gedeo farmers’ way of cultivating coffee. The agroforestry approach not only helps preserve biodiversity but has better soil management, is less water-intensive, and contributes to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. The agroforestry farming techniques also provide an excellent shade tree canopy, which creates ideal conditions for exceptional tasting coffee.

Coffee produced by YCFCU farmers is organic by tradition and shade grown within the diverse forests of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Highlands. Each bag of coffee produced is traceable back to the micro-region of origin, ensuring transparency and traceability on every single lot.
